This is a joint effort of two brilliant artist who have both
worked together in the past on Tito Brown's first body of work released
in 2016 titled Urban Stereo Sounds (USS) and if you have had records
that both artist had previously collaborated on in the Urban Stereo Sounds (USS) project, it is only
right and timely that Toyenero and Tito Brown graced our airwaves
with this extended play titled H.E.R Tape Vol.1. The EP was released on
the 24th November, 2017 and consist of Seven (7) tracks and since this is
titled a volume One (1) we can only expect more smoking records from
this duo....
How We Do: This EP was opened with a brilliant introduction
of a chilled lifestyle of the 80s relived in the present day time with a superb
narrative from the rapper Tito Brown and Toyenero who did nothing
less than keep the vibe upbeat with his vocal prowess that gave the track that
freshness with an old-school kick to it. This is a good way to welcome listener
into the world of H.E.R Tape Vol.1.
Dandy: The producer Tubase did a great job with
this sample from a Jesse Jagz classic giving birth to Dandy which
seems to be part of the crux of this EP, well at least for the concept of the
artwork which was named Dandy. On this record we see Tito Brown lead
the way with his heavy bars of wordplay and with an ace vocal assistance from Toyenero
proving totally that Rap and R&B can't be separable in the world that
we live in.
Tonight: This is the lead single off this project and it is
arguably the best track thus far. We see both Toyenero and producer Tubase
and Zee Bass give us a record that has that Jon B 90s R&B
vibe to the baseline accompanied with a beautiful style of delivery by Toyenero and of course rap compliment by none other
than Tito Brown. My only frown about this record is that it should have
been longer than just 2 minutes :40 seconds.
Forever Feat. Douglas : This slow sensual record is one to die
for because it's easy to overlook but at the same time one that grows on you
and you eventually can't let go. Forever is one of my favorites off this
EP because everyone on this track brought on their A game and this record also
revealed the versatility and good choice of feature by Douglas.
Mash Up: The T.U.C produced track Mash Up is by far
the best record off the H.E.R Tape. Why? Because of the following ; it
has that fresh pop sound mixed with retro samples that if well promoted can be
a crossover hit, the synergy between Tito Brown and Toyenero is
impeccable and the production arrangements is top notch making it a solid record
of the tape.
Roll With You Feat. Cloud9Ne: This is a hip hop soul infested
track and with the recuirtment of Cloud9Ne it added that extra ruffneck hip
hop vibe and quality to the record. This love song is beautifully assembled by Toyenero
and Tito Brown in the manner that both real hip hop heads and the
lovers rock can relate from all aspect of the song therefore, making it one of
the best of records off this project. And a well executed visual of this track
will do justice to this record.
Tequila and Gin Feat. Joey Jam: Tequila and Gin
wraps up this EP with Tito Brown owning this one with his swift style of
flow and witty wordplay which makes it simply amazing to listen. However, we
see Toyenero and Joey Jam hold their forth on the record and
giving it that all roundedness to the record. The production effort on this track adds that
mid-tempo vibe that has that alluring instrumentals and samplings that makes it a very
likeable record.
Toyenero and Tito Brown who are both members
of the Purple Street Movement (PSM) that also includes a great lineup of other great and talented artist from the Tin City of Jos have indeed delivered a great joint project (H.E.R
Tape Vol.1) and with such quality of work on the Vol.1 this can only mean better
growth and improvement on subsequent volumes. The EP had a great balance of features by (Joey Jam, Cloud9ne and Douglas) that didn't distract listener's from the main aim of the project which is that it is a joint effort of a duo and the essence should be felt by both. I also like the fact that the kept their production lineup between Tubase, T.U.C, and Zeek Bass who all had unique flavor and vibe to the tape. Therefore, I would like to rate this Extended Play a 7/10 this could have been higher but due to the fact the song arrangement (track listing) was poor because the EP got better by each track with the better tracks at the later part of the EP. This can be a great disadvantage to the project because if an artist cannot give a good impression at the start of any project released, the chances that listeners/audience would be patient to keep listening to the project to the end where the goldmine is hidden is usually very slim. so my advice is always put your best foot forward because that might be the only chance you got. But overall this a brilliant work I enjoyed listening to it and look forward to more collaborations from both artist.
