EP Review: Ayo Jay - Lazy Genius

Ayo Jay aka Wonder Boy who is signed to One Nation Record/RCA has finally released his debut body of work dubbed Lazy Genius. Ayo has been in the music scene for a while now with a couple of notable hit records to his name such as Available, Your Number and Your Number (remix) featuring Fatty Wep. So now we get to feel the Wonder Boy on a deeper level on the extended play - Lazy Genius. The EP was released on the 13th September, 2018 and consist of Seven (7) tracks with notable features from Akon, Safaree, Rotimi, James Yammouni and Faydee. The Lazy Genius EP is one worth checking out if you are an R&B fan, so join us as we take a listen and review this project by the wonder boy Ayo Jay

''The Vibe'': Ayo Jay Kicks off the EP with a track earlier released in the year which i  presume serves as the lead single off his debut project. The Vibe is a record produced by prolific producer Young D and as the name implies the record has that new school fresh vibe to it, with a mix of the that 90s R&B groove. Ayo Jay really showed his versatility on this record with a bit of a flip to his style of lyrical flow making The Vibe all the more interesting and one of the strongest record off this extended play.

''No Feelings Feat. Akon & Safaree'': This is yet another great track off this EP  and this it is not because he had Akon or Safaree on it but because it could have been a great record with or without them. No Feelings is a record beautifully written with a very alluring melody and with such heavyweight features that are all appropriate added depth and quality to the record and interestingly Ayo Jay also has production credit on this track with production assistant by Yobo Music. The Wonder Boy further confirms his versatility and the reason his called the ''Wonder Boy.'' This is a track i would love to see further promotion on as a single off this EP, hopefully with the assistant of a brilliantly executed visual.

''Let Him Go'': Okay on this third track Ayo Jay keeps the tempo going for the project, having kept the listener's spellbound and wanting to hear more of Lazy Genius. I must admit this is a very brilliant strategy to win new fans or get anyone to listen to a full project from  the start to finish. Let Him Go is a record if well promoted can be the another hit single off this project because the record has great potential to be one. This is definitely a solid track off this project.

''10 Over 10 Feat. Rotimi'': Ayo Jay recruited Rotimi for this record dubbed 10 Over 10, a mid-tempo record which gave them room to display their vocal abilities and giving listeners a pleasure to have that R&B trill with a mix of the Afrobeats vibes. This is an appropriate track selection for the EP and it gives the project some live outside what would have been predictable about the EP.

''Don't Know Why Feat. James Yammouni'':  This is by far the most creative track off this EP and it is safe to say this is my most favorite record off the Lazy Genius project. The reasons why i chose Don't Know Why as my favorite record is because of the following reasons; it is a properly written record with a very catchy hook with a memorable melody and sonically, the production is topnotch. Both James Yammouni and Ayo Jay delivered fantastic vocal prowess to give the record the depth that made it all that.

''Its Okay'' Ayo Jay switches this up a bit with that pop feel as well as maintaining his R&B base. Its Okay is an okay record appropriate for album tracklist because it is beautifully written love song but not necessarily a track with a hit potential. Overall Its Okay is a fair record off the Lazy Genius project.

''Want You'': This is one record that has all the right elements for an African hit. Want You is that record that would be a favorite at wedding parties and lounges and maybe the radio because  Want You  has that quality to its content and i am talking lyrics wise and the way it  was laced on this Afrobeats baseline makes it a winner.

This is solid debut project from Ayo Jay and it would be lovely see a full LP from the Wonder Boy. The ''Lazy Genius'' is a beautifully arranged EP with topnotch production credits by Young D, HOD, Melvitto, Yobo Music, Willie Tafa, Davy Pota and Ayo Jay himself. The project also saw guest features from the likes of Akon, Safaree, Rotimi, James Yammouni and Faydee with all features adding quality and depth to the project with no misplaced feat by theses artist. However, the composition of the tracks isn't on that level that can give an artist a total winner score but a solid one. Therefore, based on  the above reasons I would rate ''Lazy Genius''  a 6.5/10.
