EP Review: Funbi - Serenade

Funbi debuts his extended play dubbed Serenade on his last birthday which was on the 4th day of November, 2018 and it consist of Seven (7) tacks and some notable female features from acts such as: Seyi Shay and Efya. This talented R&B singer has had supportive and remarkable features in several solid projects over the past years with renowned acts that include; Show Dem Camp (SDC), Ladipoe, Odunsi (The Engine) and Chyn. But now we not only get to hear him in a supportive role but experience him in all his totality as an artist we have loved to listen to on choruses or in a hook of other songs.

Show UpFunbi introduces us to his extended play with this smooth mid- tempo number dubbed Show Up and it is a beautifully written love song about getting the love of your life you deserve and can't get her off your mind. Most importantly, Funbi delivers the lines through his vocal stunting and also the hook in the chorus makes Show Up a very likable track.

Show Your Color: This is a feel good mid-tempo track that Funbi has created along the line of the dynamism of relationships we could relate to and it is pretty creative for Funbi to bring that out on Show Your Color. Then the definition of the EP title (Serenade) which came towards the end of the record in a form of poetry added some color and depth to the track, giving listeners a reason to pay full attention to the body of work. Great work!

Serenade: This is yet another beautiful acoustic track and the crux or title track/focus of the album. Funbi opened up the record with the strings of the guitar and switches his style up with that reggae vibe and a blend of two genre as he brought it to life by the soothing vocal dexterity of Funbi's voice. This is by far one of the best records sonically produced on this project and this is not because this single is the title track of the entire project but so much so, it is a beautifully written love song, with an amazing twist in the style of production and would be perfect for any live performances.

Voodoo: Voodo is that perfect lounge track with all the right elements to get you on the dance floor and grove to the rhythm of the drums and of course Funbi never disappointments when it comes to his songwriting skills as we see also him go flirty on this record to his love interest and the vibe is pretty much amazing. This is by far the best record off the EP and if well projected would be a radio and lounge favorite.

Body (Feat. Seyi Shay): This is a soothing / fresh mid -tempo number that showcases an amazing synchronization of two vocal talents on a subtle groovy production. The feature of Seyi Shay on Body is a perfect pick and blend for Funbi to have expressed his brilliance on a record that accentuates the Body as the focus of attraction and the record also deserves a relatively provocative video to really expose the depth and sultry nature of the track.

Ride With You (Feat. Efya): Funbi recruits Ghanaian songstress Efya to bring to life this highlife influenced track and it is simply a lovely track. The concept of this record is a call and response kind of record and i love the way Efya uses her local dialect to express her emotions through the lyrics of the song and this indeed added color and flavor to Ride With You. This is an appropriate record to have made the extended play and it really did add a depth of quality to the entire project.

I Want it Back: This is Funbi pushing the envelope on a record that is purely a reggae oriented track and also we see how he has been able to compliment the production of this record with a switch in his vocal delivery which is totally brilliant. This is one of the best produced track on the Serenade project and a perfect way to wrap up the body of work.

Here are my final thoughts on the EP review for  ''Serenade'' this is an easy to listen and quick to digest project and it was certainly a joy ride because it had the right mix of different love topics that can be related to in our everyday life. Funbi's debut project ''Serenade'' is a SOLID project  putting into consideration his careful thought on his line up of two talented female artist (Seyi Shay and Efya)  and both acts were a great compliment in their supporting roles on this project. It is hard to fault any aspect of this project and we have to applaud Funbi's artist and repertoire and of course his entire team for a great selection of work put together for listeners to have a glimpse of the talent Funbi embodies and when i say glimpse, its because this young lad i believe has just began and more can be realized from his talent if well tapped and managed. Therefore, my conclusion and rating of ''Serenade'' would be a 8.5/10.

Mixtape Review: Ladipoe - Talk About Poe (T.A.P)

Ladipoe  is the foremost rap act signed to Mavin Records and he has released his debut body of work dubbed Talk About Poe (T.A.P) . Poe who has  finally come into his own with the release of his mixtape is one perceived to have no room for compromise for quick fame. So now we get to hear Ladipoe on a full-fledged project and feel the essence of his craft upon the release of - Talk About Poe (T.A.P). The mixtape was released on the 5th of October, 2018 and consist of Ten (10) tracks with notable features from Seyi Shay, Funbi, Ghost of (SDC), Sir Dauda and Tems. The Talk About Poe mixtape is one worth checking out if you are a big hip hop fan. Therefore,  join us as we take a listen and review this project by Ladipoe

''Intro'': The introduction to this mixtape by Poe has that instant connection of intimacy with the voice note from probably a close family member or friend, which is a great way to kick off the Talk About Poe (T.A.P) project. There is no greater motivation than when you have family members encourage you by them believing in your craft as an artist and that is my interpretation of  Ladipoe's Introduction. I must say this is a great way to let listeners into your world and this truly shows the essence of Poe's artistry capability.

''Voices Feat. Efya'': This is technically the first track off the mixtape and we see Ladipoe recruit Efya from Ghana on the chorus who did a marvelous job with her vocal prowess by sounding like the perfect match for this song and of course she was the right pick for Voices. Poe went further on how he has personified this project with the excerpts/voice note at the end of the record of either a family member or friend. The multiple combinations of the different elements infused to the record along side his brilliant wordplay gives it so much positive energy and this makes it one of the best tracks off the Talk About Poe (T.A.P) project.

''Double Homicide Feat. Ghost of (SDC)'': Double Homicide is a record that features Ghost of (SDC) and we see both artist flip the script from their usual style of rap to something more fast paced like that 80s/90s style of rap. And both Ladipoe and Ghost delivers lines on  a solid/crisp vocal texture making Double Homicide an instant hip hop classic .The feeling i get listening to this record shows that both artist had a great time recording this track.  Great job!!!

''Red Light Feat. Seyi Shay'': Ladipoe and Seyi Shay came together on this record dubbed Red Light and after my first listen i was sort of underwhelmed but on the second listen it sounded better, so i am guessing its that kind of record that grows no you. Seyi Shay definitely brought the pop vibe into the song (a little something for the club) and it is also nice to see LadiPoe display a witty side of him on the Red Light track. I must say an appropriate record to have made the tracklist but not necessarily a big record for me on this mixtape.

''One Step Closer Feat. Funbi'':  The One Step Closer featuring Funbi is a great love story that slows down the pace of the mixtape and it is certainly a good thing. I must confess Funbi's vocal skill  gives such sweet melodious vibe and it is unmatched, unforgettable and he did just that on the chorus for One Step Closer. And i must add that the production level of this track is beautiful because of all that lush sounds of the horn layered on such a soulful vocal delivery making it one of the best track off the tape.

''Falling Feat. Tems''Ladipoe kicks off this record with an interesting and brilliant conversation about boys to girls which sort of like reminds me of a similar conversation Ms Lauryn Hill had on her classic debut solo album; The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill about love. Therefore, this creative concept held me sway on how deep this record is and how i enjoyed the content even though the record might be perceived to be boring, based on the tempo or vibe of the song but the track gives that atmosphere were opposite sex can connect, or more like a place of understanding of each other and Tems with that unique vocal texture added great depth to the record.

''Mood'': Poe slows down the tempo on this record dubbed Mood and he expresses his mixed feelings about his everyday experiences and he does it brilliantly well. This track personifies the conscientiousness that Ladipoe's  adds to his skill and style as a rapper. However, the record feels like something that could have been an interlude of some sort and not a four (4) minute track. Overall, Poe proves once again his quality as one of the best out here.

''Win Win'': The production of this record is fantastic because it has that hardcore old school baseline with a very solid modern trap twist to it. This gave rise to Ladipoe's Win Win storytelling layout of how you can win against all odds most especially in a country like Nigeria. It is important that Win Win had made the tracklist of the project T.A.P because the record represents our everyday life which i think it the essence or direction of this project and the contrast of it was beautifully delivered by this rap genius.

''Hello Goodbye Feat. Sir Dauda'': The Hello Goodbye record features the highly talented act Sir Dauda who kicks off the record with his powerful vocal  deliver layered on the serenading sound of the guitar and the rhythm of the talking drums and horns, giving the song that wholesomeness it deserves on a beautifully written song by both Poe and Sir Dauda. This record in my opinion has the best production output on the T.A.P mixtape period. A well executed video will bring this record to life.

''Revival'': The Revival track is a closure to the Talk about Poe (T.A.P) as he announced sadly. The Revival record, we get to see Poe switch it up again to a fast paced style of rap and as usual he killed it. I like the fact that Ladipoe followed through the concept of the mixtape as we see more talk about him on the mixtape, a typical life of an artist full of criticisms, praises and whatnot but in the end you need to put all that into perspective as an artist to get to where you want to be. Indeed Poe is the ''Last of the dying breed.''

This is solid debut project by Ladipoe and Talk About Poe (T.A.P) is definitely worth the wait. The ''T.A.P'' project is one out of a few hip hop body of work i have heard this year that commands my respect. The project had a great song arrangement, good buildup of concept, appropriate features and a high quality of production. The project had guest features such as:  Efya,Funbi, Sir Dauda, Seyi Shay and Tems who all added quality and depth to the project. It its rare in the Nigerian scene to see a mixtape with such high quality lof work aimed at achieving perfection and based on the above I would rate ''Talk About Poe (T.A.P) ''  an 8/10.

Funbi Debuts Serenade [EP]

''Funbi releases his debut project, a full length EP aptly titled “Serenade”.
Singing of the women in his life, Funbi weaves in and out of love and meaningful experiences with each song–from sensual, to genuine, adventurous to deeply touching.
“It’s almost like the story of my life, with each memory defined by the women who have made an impact,” Funbi said. “They’re intelligent, they’re beautiful, they’re complex. The project is about how they have affected my life in real and lasting ways. I think many people, especially guys, can resonate with that.”
From funk to Afrobeat, folk and alternative–the smooth singer’s dynamic range is prominently on display throughout the sultry seven track offering; highlighting his romance with soul, and most notably–indicating a return to tasteful, sensual R&B.
Funbi is, at his best, a versatile singer and storyteller whose essence captures the new Nigerian sound: drawing from the past, highlighting the present, and pushing the boundaries for the future of unconfined African music.''

EP Review: Show Dem Camp (SDC) - Palm Wine Music EP (VOL. 1)

''Show Dem Camp (SDC)'' Releases a brand new project in less than a year after the release of their Mixtape - ''Clone Wars 3: The Recession'' and this extended play is titled ''Palm Wine Music EP (Vol 1)'' which consist of seven (7) tracks and was released on the 19th June, 2017. Follow me as we take a trip inside the mind of ''Palm Wine Music'' and see what ''SDC'' have got for us on this EP.

Up 2 you Feat. Funbi (Ikon Mix): The producer ''Spax'' kicks off the EP with an amazing number with the alluring vibe of the strings on the guitar, accompanied by the soothing vocals of ''Funbi'' which captures the essence of this ''Palm Wine Music'' concept SDC has got to share with the world.... a laid back/feel good track filled with soul as well as the core of rap. ''Up 2 You'' is the lead single of this extended play which has an amazing retro type of visual to it and it can easily become one of your favourites off the EP.

Compose Feat. Boj: ''Compose'' takes us deeper into the life blood of ''Palm Wine Music (Vol.1)'' as ''Boj'' holds sway on the hook with his edgy alternative sound and ''SDC'' rap verses adding weight to the record. What captures you on this track is the influence of highlife and jazz laced with the ''SDC'' lyrical prowess.

Wahala Skit: This is a very relatable topic and more like; battle of the sexes as both opinion can be said to be valid on the skit. However, its important for everyone to know who you are dealing with in a relationship. The concept of this skit is so creative as the message hits the hail on the head with a very simple and precise delivery that has a call in radio type of concept to it.

Independent Ladies Feat. Ajebutter22: As the name implies ''Independent Ladies'' is a song about women who work hard to get it on their own and do not have to depend on a man to survive. This is a solid track off this EP with heavy Highlife/Afrobeat influences as we see ''Spax'' production skills comes into full effect and an appropriate ''Ajebutter22'' feature. The brilliance of ''Tec'' and ''Ghost SDC'' verses expresses the reality of being an independent lady which can have a flipside but its all a choice and the wisdom of keeping a balance in knowing her place in the relationship makes her a winner/keeper.

She Wants More Feat. LadiPoe: ''SDC'' recruits ''Mavin Records'' rapper ''LadiPoe'' who kicks off this record with brilliant wordplay as ''SDC'' completes this beautiful soulful track with verses of attraction towards the opposite sex. This is definitely one of the best records off this EP that adds value to the ''Palm Wine Music'' vibe/concept.

What You Want Feat. Tomi Thomas: This is by far the best track off the ''Palm Wine Music EP (Vol.1)'' ''Spax'' who has been amazing throughout the production of this body of work, takes it a notch higher with this upbeat number ''What You Want'' and it features ''Tomi Thomas'' of LOS who is spot on with his vocals on the chorus giving it that Jon B like 90s vibe. SDC certainly knows how to keep listeners spellbound with their content which includes; lyrics, features, and production. Nigerian hip hop music is certainly in good hands with the quality of work that the likes of SDC keep putting out.

Popping Feat. Boj & Odunsi The Engine: This laidback record has ''Boj'' featured for the second time on this EP and it has ''Odunsi The Engine'' as well, who puts a bit of the modern trap vibe to it as SDC spit on a retrospective level bringing the ''Palm Wine Music EP (Vol.1)'' to a closure. But with great expectation for a volume 2 because it seems the journey just began with SDC.

Here are my final thoughts on this extended play ''Palm Wine Music EP (Vol.1)'' it is a chilled out EP, the kind that you listen to at a lounge or when you are chilled with good company and I am sure that was the aim of this project. ''SDC'' pulled off what can be considered as a concept project and the idea had all the right elements and with features from ''Boj'' ''Ajebutter22'' ''LadiPoe'' ''Funbi'' ''Tomi Thomas'' and Odunsi The Engine who all added an amazing quality to the project giving it that all round kick. Therefore I would like to rate ''Palm Wine Music EP (Vol.1)'' a 8/10. However, I have my reservations about the work arrangement as I would have expected that this EP should have been a little bit longer at least two additional content like an additional skit and maybe an outro or intro but great job in total.

This is the first visuals from the release of their extended play ''Palm Wine Music (Vol. 1)'' which dropped a few weeks back and we see SDC bring out ''Funbi'' on this soulful/jazz infested track titled ''Up 2 You'' and a line up of cameos from everyone featured on the EP and the retro/pop of colour concept of the video gives this single some more dept. ''Show Dem Camp'' are definitely going to have a good run in 2017.

Show Dem Camp: Palm Wine Music EP (VOL. 1)

''The new extended play nods back to the vibe SDC created four years ago with ‘Feel Alright’.
Following the completion and success of their Clone Wars mixtape series, Nigerian rap duo Show Dem Camp are set to release their next project - a seven-track EP titled Palm Wine Music (Vol. 1).
“We first discovered the palm wine vibes with Feel Alright,” the longtime pair said in a statement.
“That set the precedent, and opened us up to a new sound.”
Comprising of rappers Tec and Ghost, Show Dem Camp is often credited for starting the laid back style of party music with their 2013 hit.
“Palm Wine music” has since taken on a life of its own - with the name of the tropical drink being used to describe the sweet fusion of African percussions with live instrumentals, elements of hip hop, and an atmosphere surrounding those feel-good songs.
It represents “escaping the stress of Lagos life,” SDC adds. “It’s oneness with nature, chilling with friends, a beautiful woman… just a happy place.”
Show Dem Camp’s new compilation serves as both the reintroduction to one of Nigeria’s premiere music acts, and as a worthy immersion into the industry’s current inspired sound. Produced entirely by Spax, the EP features several leading acts in the alternative and palm wine music spaces - including Funbi, Poe, Boj, Ajebutter, Odunsi the Engine, and Tomi Thomas.
Palm Wine Music (Vol. 1), the duo’s first commercial release in over two years, is out on all platforms today June 19th. Longtime supporters of the rap group can sip on this, already knowing to expect.''

Mixtape Review: Show Dem Camp (SDC) - Clone Wars 3 :The Recession

Nigerian Hip Hop/Rap duo Show Dem Camp '' SDC'' releases the last installment to their ''Clone Wars'' mixtape series titled ''Clone Wars 3 :The Recession'' with the ''Clone Wars'' volumes 1&2 released in 2010 and 2012 respectively, on the (31st December, 2016). ''Clone Wars 3 :The Recession'' was released and consist of twelve (12) tracks.

Intro: SDC kicks off with this soothing hip hop/soulful vibe with ''Ghost of (SDC)'' introducing the tape with a roll call of shout outs to their day 1s of friends and industry mates. Then the  intro immediately draws the listener in with interesting story telling about the industry, society, economy, and future movements. a pretty good way to let you into the world of ''Clone Wars 3 :The Recession.''

Rise of the Underdogs: This track gets you going almost immediately and can end up being one of your favorites of the tape as it was the case for me. Its indeed a track for the champions. The baseline holds you sway as the strings of the guitar ushers you into the depth of the songs wholeness. As the name implies ''Tec'' and ''Ghost''  of (SDC) builds on the ''Intro'' of the tape as they paint a perfect picture of the struggles an artist face trying to rise to the top in a sector which can be quite relative to life in general but with patience and persistence anyone can rise and shine.

How Far 1: The ''Show Dem season is upon us...'' very creative track i must say. The beat starts with some dancehall vibe to get you grooving and then switches to a very hard Hip hop feel that lays a traditional ''SDC'' storytelling of what a regular lad experiences daily with the hustle.

D.I.L.L.I.G.A. Feat. Mojeed: This should stand for ''Do I Look Like I Give A...'' and it features Aristokrat Records rapper ''Mojeed'' in ''D.I.L.L.I.G.A''brings on a bit of the crunk/trap kinda music feel and this track goes out to all 'dem fake a$$ dudes who always want to be about where success is happening but ''SDC'' ain't having none of that. Well was looking forward to more bars on this track but my desire was short-lived, as the track felt like an interlude and not a full track but a great jam overall.

Love Naija: If you live in Nigeria or have lived in Nigeria you can totally relate to this track. ''SDC'' brought to life the struggles an average Nigerian goes through daily and as Nigeria is facing one of its most difficult period in its history with the ''Recession'' which is largely as a result in a build up of poor management. However, Nigeria may have recorded remarkable things and made the history books, possess both human and material wealth, and has loads of potential, reasons you would love to hate Naija. This is the reason we all ''Love Naija.'' Change for the better is eminent as we all need to effect that change as we look within.

Move Mountains: This ''Jay Z'' inspired kinda track with a classic piano piece and a motivational drive to it simply makes it a Hip hop classic. ''Move Mountains'' sees ''Tec of SDC'' lead on this one after five (5) tracks with ''Ghost of SDC'' leading the pack. This is what you call a beautiful rap sung. Indeed all we need is faith to achieve anything we desire/dream with trust in God.

BMW. Feat. Funbi: I remember growing up my dad bought a BMW car and my mom use to always call it ''Be My Wife'' and she was usually excited when she does that.. I don't know but maybe its something about German cars that get the ladies going... Lol! Anyways, ''SDC'' recruits ''Funbi'' who adds an amazing R&B/Soul touch to this love song and what a brilliant way to describe an attraction for a woman. ''BMW'' is one of my favorites off this tape and it sure deserves a visual for it to take listeners on this cruise they have already laid out on the track.

10,000 Hours: The wordplay on this record is simply amazing....''SDC'' takes us through a journey as they connect with our ancestors who had left an impact/legacy across the content and beyond and how this has inspired them to becoming better artist. ''SDC'' went further to challenge and task present day leaders on the need to leave a lasting legacy and not be carried away by how to get a piece of the ''National cake.'' This is a key track on the tape as it relates to our past, present, and future realities.

Respect My Name Feat. IkonSyndik8 Records act/producer ''Ikon'' lights it up on this track ''Respect My Name'' as ''SDC'' spills about the doggedness of the music industry from; deception, intrigues, politics, betrayals, jealously, envy, and the list goes on. But those that will survive need to stay true to self and not get caught up in the hype. ''Respect My Name'' is a very intense track that reveals the rawness of this Hip hop duo.

Tales Of A Side Nicca: Another favorite off the tape and ''SDC'' takes us into the world of being a side nicca... well i thought it was a man's world but listening to ''Tales Of A Side Nicca'' gave me a different perspective to life but hey! its the 21st century and the world of endless possibilities. Apparently, tables have turned right now... you ever been a side nicca? Lol!

The Interlude (Pay Attention)''SDC'' slows it down on this one and they asking listeners vital questions about the essence of life. What vision are you telling? Why are you here for (purpose)? These are very important questions that leaves us with a food for thought daily so we don't lose sight of the goal. Stay focused! ''(Pay Attention).''

Live, Love, Laugh, Eat Feat. Sir Dauda: This track is a deeper essence of ''The Interlude (Pay Attention)'' it exposes the need to know why you on earth for? and living that life each day towards that goal. Life gives back what you give it... life can be as simple as you make it to be as long as you let God be the center. This is yet another track off the mixtape that i feel deserves a good video too.

Here are my final thoughts on the mixtape review for  ''Clone Wars 3 :The Recession'' I enjoyed listening to the project and its certainly a listeners digest for 2017 and beyond Show Dem Camp (SDC) mixtape ''Clone Wars 3 :The Recession'' is a SOLID project considering the quality of work put into the project and how if reflects our present day Nigeria as well as the world at large. With production /sound engineering skills from the likes of ace producers ''Ikon'' and ''Kid Konnect'' and well thought out features with the likes of; Sir Dauda,Funbi,Mojeed, all added great value to the tape and it is quite hard to fault this mixtape and based on my conclusion I would rate ''Clone Wars 3 :The Recession'' a 9/10. Worth checking out...
I look forward to a Show Dem Camp (SDC) Sophomore Album titled ''That Year'' in 2017.
