Life of Legendary South AFRICAN Music Icon, Hugh Masekela

''The International Committee of AFRIMA (All Africa Music Awards) celebrates the life of an African music icon and activist, Hugh Masekela as he passed on peacefully at his country home, Johannesburg, South Africa after a protracted battle with prostate cancer on January 23, 2018 at the aged 78.
Masekela was nominated for three nominations at the 2017 AFRIMA Awards in the categories of 'Best Male Artiste in Southern Africa' for his recent single 'Shango', 'Album of the Year' for his recent album 'No Borders' and for the 'Best Artiste in African Jazz'. These three nominations show that the legend waxed strong till his last breadth. Masekela was scheduled to be at the host city, Lagos, Nigeria, for the 2017 AFRIMA Awards in November but was unable to make it due to his ill health in spite all his efforts.
The President and Executive Producer, AFRIMA, Mike Dada, stated that “it is a huge loss for the continent and African music. Masekela's music had the depth, the lyricism and the instrumentation that place the legend in the class of world music classics with a definitive signature of its African sound. The music icon will be greatly missed but his music and struggle for free and prosperous Africa will always be in our hearts and minds.
Masekela gained global recognition with his distinctive Afro-Jazz sound and hit song-Soweto Blues. He creates music from his Africa's experiences andis known for excellent use of trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone and cornet instruments.
Born in April 4, 1939 and ventured into music as a child when the anti-apartheid chaplain, Archbishop Trevor Huddleston gave him a trumpet as a gift. He found escape from the racial chaos in South Africa in his days with music. He later joined the Johannesburg Native Municipal Bras Band, Uncle Suada. In later years, Masekela studied the art of music in London's Guildhall School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music, New York.
The legend had released 49 Albums from the 1966 to 2016 and featured legends like Paul Simon, Lady Smith Mambazo, Mariam Makeba and others. He was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Pop Performance – Instrumental in 1968 for his single 'Grazing in the Grass', an anti-apartheid piece which sold 4 million copies among other nominations.
AFRIMA will pay tribute to Hugh Masekela in a glorifying spectacle at its fifth edition scheduled to hold in November 2018.''

Tomi Agape Feat. Nonso Amadi - In The Night

''2018 is off to an exciting start for North London's very own Tomi Agape, as today sees the release of her new single ‘In The Night’.

Tomi enlists long time collaborator Spax for the production of the sultry-Dancehall infused track, featuring Canadian based artist, Nonso Amadi.

‘In The Night’ serves as the lead single from Tomi Agape’s forthcoming EP, where she is set to have drawn inspiration from her African roots. While the EP title and release date are both yet to be confirmed, Tomi has been working tirelessly on the project and has been working with a number of producers to help bring her vision to life.

Last year saw Tomi Agape cement herself in the scene as a promising act to watch, as she featured on Juls debut L.P. ‘Leap of Faith’, on the stand out track ‘After Six’ (featuring Santi). As well as having released her own material ‘La La La’ (featuring Poe) and ‘Breeze’.

Speaking on the collab, Tomi said “this track is one that I feel makes so much sense. The collaboration between Nonso and I is perfect, because of the way our vocals are, the way we sing.” She then went on to say “when I played it for a few people, some said they couldn’t tell the difference between our voices; which I found quite interesting. We’ve put a lot of work into the song, I’m excited for people to hear it.”

The video has been shot in Canada and will be unveiled later on this month.''

EP Review: Di'ja - Aphrodija

The Mavin Records songstress  Di'ja finally releases her first body of work with a self title EP Aphrodija The EP was released on the 15th December, 2017 and consist of Seven (7) tracks with features from label mates Tiwa Savage and Reekado Banks and line up of Mavins resident ace producers like; Don Jazzy, Baby Fresh, Altims and Egar Boi. Now lets press the play button to see what Aphrodija has to offer.

Ordinary Day: Di'ja  opens up the EP with a brilliant number titled Ordinary Day. This record which encompasses a motivational consciousness of life and encourages individuals to take one step at a time by accepting who they are regardless of their circumstances. I wouldn't have expected Ordinary Day to be the first song off the Aphrodija EP usually songs like this  come toward the end of a project to wrap things up but all the same I love this record despite its position on the track list.

The Way You Are (Gbadun You) Feat. Tiwa Savage: is a record that features the queen herself Tiwa Savage and produced by Baby Fresh. Di'ja delivers a creative love song with a subtle hook that is very likable and it is definably a record for the love season or even better at weddings parties. With the aid of a clean visual to go with it, The Way You Are (Gbadun You) is certainly tipped to be a great hit in 2018.

My Lover Feat. Reekado Banks: This record has everything of that modern day afrobeats ensemble with a touch of that r&b/calypso fusion and it couldn't have been any other artist to have feature on this track than the talented act Reekado Banks. Di'ja truly shows her vocal purity as an artist with this style of recording with Egar Boi giving that amazing highlife feel to giving this record that wholeness.

Abi Na Jazz: Listening to this record did only one thing for me... it gladdened my heart and why is that? It is by far the most creative record off this EP both vocally and with the production prudency. This track just shows the versatility of Di'ja and one to watch out for in the coming years but sadly the record is just over 2minutes long but hey! they say less is more. lol.

Something New: This is certainly one of the underwhelming records off this EP but with a good message for all y'all fake dudes out there who pay so much attention to material things. However, the production by Baby Fresh is totally off the hinges with the use of the trumpets added great quality to the record. This is a great effort by Di'ja.

Save Me: Di'ja drops a fabulous ballad about the realities of our nation and the world that we live in today and a need for humanity to show some kindness and love to one another. This is by far one of the best records off Aphrodija EP with a brilliant combination and arrangement of the strings of the bass guitar and the piano, as well as Di'ja's beautiful song writing skills. This song deserves a well thought out visual to drive this message home as part of her social responsibility.

Yeye: A typical Afrobeats influenced track with heavy weight backup vocals by none other than Don Jazzy. Yeye is a fun loving diss track for the f**boys and the sound of this record is a usual territory for Di'ja making the track all loveable.  I must say a good and safe choice to end this project.

Di'ja  defiantly has delivered an unexpected solid EP with Aphrodija  and we can only ask for more. The EP had two great features by (Tiwa Savage and Reekado Banks) that didn't steal the shine of the main act. And with the help of business mogul/producer Don Jazzy  with other production line-up such as; Baby Fresh, Altims, and Egar Boi who all had unique flavour and vibe  to add to the EP giving it that depth and quality. Therefore, I would like to rate this Extended Play an 8/10, this is  certainly a brilliant debut effort by Di'ja and I am excited and cant wait to hear a full LP by this talented artist in the nearest feature.
